DIY Steps for Eyebrow Threading

The eyebrows are very important for your face. Their shape can either make or break your appearance. On one hand, beautifully shaped eyebrows can brighten your face and even make you look younger. While, on the other hand, the eyebrows that are not shaped properly can make your face look dull and unattractive.

One of the most popular ways of shaping eyebrows is threading. Eyebrow threading requires much effort and creativity. Here, in this blog, we are going to talk about a simple technique for a perfect eyebrow threading. You can use the given tips and steps to get your eyebrows done at home and also by yourself. But first, let’s have a brief discussion about the eyebrows and what exactly eyebrow threading means.

What is eyebrow threading?

Threading is a hair removal technique that is practiced widely in India, in many areas in Asia and the Middle East. Though it is mostly used to shape and groom eyebrows, one can even remove excess amounts of facial and body hairs using this technique. The procedure of eyebrow threading is done using a looped cotton thread. All you need to do is roll the cotton thread over the intended area in a crisscross manner and in a sudden movement allowing it to pluck out the targeted hair. The thread should be plucked according to the required shape of the eyebrows.

The process of eyebrow threading may seem easy, but it takes great skill and years of practice to create beautifully groomed and well-defined arches, that lasts longer than shaving or tweezing. Let’s have a look at the steps for eyebrow threading that will help you get perfectly shaped eyebrows;

Steps for Eyebrows Threading

STEP 1: SHAPE YOUR EYEBROWS

The very first step in eyebrow threading is to provide a shape to it using a pencil eyeliner. For this, you need to draw an imaginary straight line from the top of your nose to your brows. That is the place from where your eyebrows start and where you should begin, especially if you’re new to eyebrows shaping. Use an eyebrow pencil to outline and fill in your eyebrows exactly how you want them. This will help prevent you from removing too much hair and also makes it easier to get the desired shape of your eyebrows. STEP 2: TRIM OFF EXCESS HAIR

The next step is to trim off the excess hair from the eyebrows.  It is always advised to trim off long hair prior to threading to prevent pulling them out completely. You need to use a spoolie brush to brush the hairs upwards, and then trim the tops off with a small set of scissors. After you are done with trimming, use a makeup brush to brush off the trimmed hair from your face.

STEP 3: PREPARE YOUR THREAD

Always use cotton thread that is made especially for eyebrow threading. Other normal threads can be harsh on your skin. Get a cotton thread and cut a piece of cotton thread to be the length of about your forearm. Note that the less string you use, the more control you will have. Tie the ends together to create a loop.

STEP 4: TEST THE THREAD

Now, test the thread to find out if it works fine. For this, hold the string with your thumbs and index fingers inside the loops on each side, then pull your right thumb and index finger apart. The thread twists  should move toward your left hand. Now, close the space between your right thumb and index finger and open the space between the left thumb and index finger. This is the threading motion that traps the hair in the twisted thread and pulls them out.

STEP 5: BEGIN THREADING

Now begin with threading your eyebrows. Here, the general rule of the thumb is, your eyebrows should begin from the inner corner of your eye, and you should be able to figure that out using a ruler. Now, it’s ideal to go up to the same extent when you’re threading. But be careful, this is the farthest you want to go. If you’re unsure about it, it’s better to let few hair strands stay. It’s easy to remove hair instead of waiting for them to grow back and penciling them in.

Deciding on how much to arch your eyebrows is one of the most important parts of designing the brow. The features of the face need to be considered for the purpose.

Another reference point is the top of the nostril, still aiming, over the middle of the pupil, for a medium arch and the far side of the pupil for a large arch. (Tip: right nostril for right eye, left nostril for the left eye).

Place the end of a ruler near the outer nose, touching the corner of the eye, this is where the brow should end. Usually, women tend to go slightly outside this last line.

You can see the perfect eyebrow shape already in place in the image above. When someone shapes the brows correctly, the eyes appear to be framed nicely. If the first thing you notice about someone is their eyebrows, then they’re not in the right shape.

Step 6: SOOTHE ANY IRRITATED SKIN

When you finish threading, your skin may be a bit red or inflamed. If so, pat the threaded area with a gentle astringent, like witch hazel, to calm and clear the pores.
The extra effort that you put maintaining your brows will pay off as the result. Once you have the exact shape that you like, the upkeep will be easy. You will be able to see clearly what has grown in and needs to be removed.

Few Tips for Eyebrow Threading

  • Do not put anything on your eyebrows, including eyebrow cleansers, moisturizers or makeup immediately after threading. This is because, it will make your open pores vulnerable to bacterial infection.
  • Don’t wait for your eyebrows to be completely messy. Ensure that you perform touch ups whenever you realize that your brow hair has grown above your skin.
  • In between your brow threading appointments, avoid using a razor to cut some of the eyebrows that might have grown. This will produce the same effect as shaving and will encourage the growth of more coarse and thicker eyebrows.
  • Since eyebrow waxing removes only a row of hair at a time, ensure that you don’t try taking more hair than you intended.
  • Ensure that the thread doesn’t get hold of your skin, as this will be very painful.
  • The final  tip is ensuring that you have washed your face before you begin the process. This will remove any dead skin that might be present.

Few Eyebrow Threading Benefits

  • Long Lasting

Removing hair using threading gives a long lasting result compared to waxing or tweezing. Most people do not notice any eyebrow re-growth until at least three to four weeks after they get eyebrow threading done.

  • Younger Look

Waxing pulls the skin which over time makes the skin loose. This in result, causes premature wrinkles to appear. While eyebrow threading just pulls the hair, leaving the skin with more elasticity, making you look younger.

  • Improvement in the look and quality of the brows

Threading is different from shaving, as it lifts the hair from the hair follicle. This results in weakening the hair follicle, which makes the hair less dense over time. New hair, that grows, is finer and sparser, so the more you thread your eyebrows, the better eyebrows you will have.

  • Less Painful

A huge benefit of eyebrow threading is that it is less painful than waxing or tweezing. It also results in less skin irritation, than the ones caused by applying chemicals on your skin, such as those found in eyebrow waxes. Acne breakouts can even be common for those who wax their eyebrows, but eyebrow threading doesn’t have that risk.

  • Better Shape

In comparison to waxing or tweezing, eyebrow threading gives a better shape to your brow. Threading removes hair of any texture and length, giving it an edge over many other methods. Eyebrow threading also removes hair in a short line which makes shaping your brows easier and resulting in cleaner more defined eyebrows.
