Wax On, Wax Off: The Do’s and Don’ts of At-Home Waxing

Once you overlook the small things like, you know unbearable pain, at-home waxing is mighty tempting.  You’ll be stubble-free for weeks minus the razor burns or nicks. However, at-home waxing involves more than just a simple disposable razor.

So, before you go on and try that waxing kit, read these essential tips for at-home waxing. That way, you’ll wind-up with smooth and hair-free skin, not ingrowns or frustration. Because let’s face is pain is pretty much guaranteed so why not make the best of it.

DO start with the legs if you’ve never given yourself a wax before, you’ll have a good view of what you’re doing. Also, the skin is tougher on that part, decreasing the odds that you’ll fall of the edge of the bathtub in pain after pulling off the wax strips.

DON’T attempt a Brazilian wax off yourself- you won’t be able to see what you’re doing as well as professionals do, and an obstructed view and hot wax are not a good combination.

DO apply tooth numbing cream in the area you plan to wax about half an hour prior to your session, It will temporarily numb the skin, making the experience a little less painful (hopefully).

DON’T moisturize right before the wax.

DO soak up the moisture with baby powder, which will allow the wax to adhere to your hair better.

DON’T pull at the hair every which way. Make sure you’re pulling the wax strip against the grain of hair growth.

DO exfoliate and moisturize after waxing to smooth skin and to remove any wax residue.

DON’T go over the same area more than three times, you’ll irritate the skin and increase your odds of ingrown hairs, it will only reduce the chances of getting smooth and hair-free skin.

The Bottom Line

If you take time to practice the right technique, waxing is a totally easy, convenient and effective way to remove hair at home. Try it! And if you can’t or don’t want to, you can always seek for professional help.
